On April 10, 2003, our Chairman, Dr. Gao gave a speech on Pharmaceutical Innovation and IP Protection at a seminar sponsored by the China Intellectual Property News and the R&D-based Pharmaceutical Association in China. Journalists and editors from the medical columns of key Beijing media were also invited.
Dr. Gao gave a general introduction to the development and present situation regarding the protection of pharmaceutical inventions in China in his speech, but his speech then focused on the current situation and trends in pharmaceutical invention protection around the world as well as the effect, challenges and significance accession to the WTO has brought to China in respect of pharmaceutical invention protection.

Beijing High People's Court reverses Beijing No. 1 Intermediate People’s Court ruling in a landmark patent case won by East IP

On March 20, 2003 the Beijing High People's Court in its final ruling on a landmark patent case appealed by Shanghai SailStar Machinery (Group) Co., Ltd. against the State Intellectual Property Office (SIPO) Patent Reexamination Board, reversed both the first instance ruling of the Beijing No. 1 Intermediate People's Court and the original decision by the SIPO Patent Reexamination Board. These prior decisions, which ruled for the invalidation of one of the appellant's important utility model patents for washing machines, were over-turned and the appellant's patent confirmed. The said patent holds important significance for the industrial washing machine industry in China. East IP represented the wining party which is a major foreign invested company in this field.

From February 24, 2003 to February 25, 2003, the 6th National Member Meeting of the All-China Patent Agents Association (ACPAA) was held at the China Intellectual Property Training Center. The Commissioner of SIPO Mr. Jingchuan WANG, the Deputy Commissioner of SIPO Mr. Boming WU, leaders of the 5th All China Patent Agents Association and over 100 high-level professionals from Chinese patent service organizations attended the meeting. On February 25, our Chairman, Dr. Lulin GAO (former Commissioner of SIPO) was elected President of the ACPAA.

On December 3, 2002, the "2002 Patent Practices Symposium," organized under the auspices of East IP Law Offices was held at the Beijing Kerry Centre. During the Symposium, Mr. Lipu TIAN Deputy Commissioner of SIPO, Mr. Rengan SHEN Deputy Commissioner of NCAC, Dr. Lulin GAO, our Chairman and the former Commissioner of SIPO as well as other high-level officials made keynote speeches. Participants in the Symposium, all high-level officials from well-known enterprises home and abroad and IP experts, warmly discussed many hot topics of current interest.

Dr. Lulin Gao, the East IP chairman, attended a conference in Qingdao, China to discuss the judicial practices of IP rights. Dr. Gao spoke on the topic of judicial protection and enforcement of IP rights in China following the WTO accession. He was the keynote speaker among a highly distinguished field of experts which included some of China's top IP officials. Dr. Gao is next scheduled to speak at an upcoming conference in Washington, D.C.

The China WTO Strategic Planning: 2002 and Beyond conference was held on November 27 - 28, 2001 in Beijing. The major thrust of the conference was on new market opportunities and the upcoming changes in the laws and regulations of the P. R. China. In attendance were two of our IP partners - Lulin Gao and Singer Huang - who presented a talk entitled Post-WTO: China's New Patent Law and How to Protect Valuable Intellectual Property in China. They also moderated discussions regarding IP in China. The talk and discussions focused on China's patent law and its latest amendments as well as practical advise on how to protect valuable intellectual property in China offering a number of case studies across a variety of industries as examples.
